Site Information

May I take this opportunity to welcome you to  images-of-ships.co.uk (A Ship Photo Archive) This site is aimed towards people with a devotion to ships from the past and present .

A little bit about me, my name is Mervyn Blowers an ordinary guy born on the East coast of England in the town of Lowestoft Suffolk in the year of 1948. I lived in Lowestoft for the first 20 years of my life. I then moved to a small village called Hulver about eight miles from Lowestoft. In 2004 I took the decision to retire early and moved north 234 miles to a small town called Masham in North Yorkshire a very different life from living near to the sea.

My seagoing career spanned from 1963 through to 1990 starting on Fishing vessels Trawlers/Drifters sailing from the port of Lowestoft, then on the decline of the fishing industry moved to the offshore sector of the North sea serving in Tugs and Supply ships, in 1990 I left my seagoing career for a shore job I stayed ashore till my early retirement in 2004.

My interests and hobbies have always included ships of all kinds especially ship photos which led to my interest in computers which in turn led to the development of this web site which including other domain names has been evolving for over five years.

If you find any errors or omissions in this site which you most probably will, or would just like to just pass a comment please email me.

If you have any photos  I can use use within this site, i.e. ship photos especially from the bygone years,  I would be more then grateful to receive them and include them within this site  and of course a reference to you or the copyright owner.   Providing the photos are within context of what I am trying to achieve. Please email me with any material you have.

This site has been devoted to people out there on the internet who have sailed the seven seas and their hobbies like mine are within the interest of  the world of ships, especially the oil/gas related industries (Tugs and Supply Ships).

Cargo Ships, Tank Ships, Coasters and Ferries and other ships, were only really  an extension or add on  to this site, but it would have been a shame to have left them by the way side and not to included them.

I would like to give people a chance to look at the large collection of ship photos, especially the old photographs,  A lot of these have been donated by a very special group of people. I have also included all the photos from my own collection .

The large part of this online collection consists of photos that  have been taken from the last thirty years by my very good friend Kevin Carter who resides in Great Yarmouth situated on the East coast of England. Kevin has donated a very large collection of ship photos to this site consisting mostly supply ships.  A lot of these rare photos are taken from the early boom years of the oil industry in Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Aberdeen.  I think these photos alone are well worth the representation within site.

This site has  progressed forward in the last few years with  the help of  material that has been donated by many people from around the world, especially my good friends from Holland Bert van der Kuijl, Willem Koper and from Belgium Richard Wisse all who send in regular updates for this site.

I hope this site will have reach some of the people that were involved in the boom years of the offshore oil/gas industry within the UK or around the world. Maybe I can help to relay a little of our offshore history that has been lost along the wayside. Please read the excellent article written by John Griffith's on the subject of offshore Supply Ships.
